ICF MARATHON WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP – METKOVIC 2024
Posted at 25.09.2024Metkovic is no stranger to international marathon: in 2018 it was the venue of the European Championship. Its main characteristics are the strong current and the big waves when the wind blows upstream and that had a major impact in some of the senior races.
For Jantex it was an historic Championship with wins in all men's kayak races:
Leonardo Candela - K1 Junior
João Sousa/Francisco Batista – K2 Junior
Philip Knudsen – K1 U23
Mads Pedersen – K1 Short Race
Mads Pedersen – K1 Men
Fernando Pimenta – K2 Men
Particularly, it was a great competition for Mads Pedersen. He is on his way to become one of the most successfull marathon paddlers of all time. In Metkovic he became the first men kayaker to win Short and Long Races in the same Championship. Considering he had already done it in the Europeans, that makes it a very successfull season. In the Short Race, Pedersen was seconded by Hamish Lovemore (what a year for him too) and Ivan Alonso - one way or the other, the spanish star always finds the route to a medal.
Unbeatable since 2022, the K2 of Fernando Pimenta and José Ramalho is one of those perfect combinations of talents that comes once in a decade. It's always a pleasure to watch it.
We would also like to emphasize the victory of Philip Knudsen in the U23. He is now the World and European Champion and keeps showing great potencial to, soon, be fighting among seniors.
One of the surprises of 2024, Maria Gomes won the K1 W Junior.
